1,142 GENEROUS DONORS GIVE IN HONOR OF THE VICTIMS OF THE
SEPTEMBER 11th TRAGEDY
Congressman Devin Nunes visited the Tulare Veteran’s Memorial Building to thank donors for their generous gift. Tulare Mayor Craig Vejvoda gave blood and thanked donors, as well.
TULARE, CA – Nearly 400 more people came out this year to donate blood in honor of the September 11th victims on the anniversary of the tragedy. New and returning donors gave at the Veteran’s Memorial Building in Tulare starting at 6:00 o’clock in the morning. Donors received a badge honoring someone who perished on 9/11, a free t-shirt, and other special donor rewards. The Central California Blood Center in Visalia opened its doors at 8:00 o’clock and folks were able to give there, as well. The goal of this year’s drive was to reach 1,000 donors – which was surpassed thanks to this generous community. KJUG’s Dave Daniels and KMJ Radio’s Ray Appleton and Chris Daniel broadcasted their shows live at the Veteran’s Memorial Building through the day.
At 10:00 O’clock, the community held a remembrance ceremony outside of the Memorial Hall to honor those who so tragically lost their lives. Two Tulare Fire Chaplains said prayers through out the memorial; a fire fighter two separate times rang a silver bell to mark when the buildings fell; and Mayor Vejvoda talked about how that fateful day changed everyone’s life and thanked the community for taking the time to save lives on this very special day.
“This is a such a meaningful and caring effort and so reflective of the community of Tulare,” states Dean Eller, President & CEO of the Central California Blood Center. “We not only would like to thank each and every donor once again but also the blood drive committee for their tireless dedication to this event, every year, as well as their every eight week regular community blood drives. Their complete commitment to saving lives is exceptional.”
Blood donation takes less than one hour to complete. Donors must be in good general health, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (16 years old with written parental consent). Senior citizens are encouraged to donate, as there is no upper age limit. Donors should eat a good meal and drink plenty of water within 4 hours prior to their donation. Donors can give blood every eight weeks. Photo ID and Social Security Number are required at donor registration.
The Central California Blood Center is the sole provider of blood and blood products for the 31 hospitals in Fresno, Tulare, Madera, Kings and Mariposa Counties and must collect between 5,000 to 6,000 pints of blood a month to meet the needs of our Valley community.
